Ladd for Alumni
Ladd Library is open without keycard access to Alumni and their guests 8am-6pm during the academic semester and 8am-4:30pm during the summer.
Most of our physical book, DVD and CD collection is available for loan.
Library staff require a Bates User ID (9-digit number) to issue a library card. If you do not have your Bates User ID, please contact Alumni Engagement before applying for a library card.
For access to College records, personal papers, including those of Edmund S. Muskie, and rare books, visit the Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections online or stop in at 70 Campus Avenue.
Privileges are limited to Bates materials and do not extend to MaineCat or Interlibrary Loan items or to materials located at Bowdoin or Colby Colleges.
The majority of our electronic collections are contractually restricted to current Bates students, faculty and staff, but there are alternative strategies you could consider.
+Some of our most popular collections

+Renewing Material
You are encouraged to track due dates online through the My Library Card function within the catalog or through the Accounts tab on the navigation bar on every library webpage.
Alumni patrons need to use the Community Login option. The first time you login, you will need to use the Create/reset password link.
Please note that the Overview Tab has limited function. Navigating to the Loans Tab will display a full list and individual renewals.

If you are still eligible to a renewal for the material type, the item is not overdue or requested by another patron, you can renew materials through the My Library Card.
If library materials are overdue or billed for replacement, they cannot not be renewed online. In this case please call the Circulation Desk at 207-786-6263 for assistance.
Material that has been recalled for another patron or course reserve may not be renewed. We may be able to help you source another copy.
You may also always walk up to the Circulation Desk for one on one assistance with renewing. Your Bates library card is required as the items are checked in and then checked out again.
+Overdue Notices and Reminders
Automated overdue notices are sent to patrons as a courtesy. The library does not assume responsibility for fees resulting from un-received or un-read email.
Patrons must assure that email from bates.edu addresses are not diverted to spam quarantine files and that your e-mail account is one that you read regularly.
Alumni must report changes in e-mail and postal address through Alumni Engagement as the library receives a patron data update daily from the college (any local changes are overridden.)
The notice schedule varies by material type and loan period. A courtesy reminder is sent two days before the due date.
Materials that are more than three weeks overdue are considered lost. The third overdue notice is a bill for replacement of the item. A credit can be issued when billed materials are returned to the library unless we have already ordered a replacement item.
+Holds and Recalls
Library patrons may place a hold on a title that is checked out.
When a copy is not available, complete the information on the Hold Form. The option “Notify me when a copy is returned” does not change the due date for the original patron, it simply adds you to the queue. In most cases, if there is another copy available from other libraries, you will get that copy quicker than waiting for a Bates patron (we have 365 day loans for faculty and staff and 150 day loans for seniors writing a thesis).
All library materials are subject to recall (forced early return dates) for course reserve. Recalled items must be returned promptly. Materials may be recalled while the college is on an academic break, during exam periods, summer break, and from faculty on sabbatical.
Patrons with overdue recalled items are blocked from library borrowing until the recalled item is returned.
If the college has to purchase a second copy to supply classes, patrons can no longer be issued a credit upon returning the item.
+Replacement Costs
Patrons are liable for the price of replacing library material that is lost, damaged or stolen. Patrons may not replace library material with an independently purchased copy. The Library, in its sole discretion, will determine whether to replace items with different editions or formats as best fits our changing curriculum.
All material types eligible for loan to Alumni are charged a replacement cost of $75 or market price, whichever is greater (refunded if item is returned in usable condition).
If the college has to purchase a second copy to supply classes, patrons can no longer be issued a credit upon returning the item.
Replacement charges must be payed at the Circulation Desk located on the Main Floor of the library. Please pay by check or exact cash amount. Checks should be made payable to Bates College. Change is not available at the library.
