Landscape painting expert to discuss special exhibit at Bates

John Arthur, author of "Spirit of Place: Contemporary Landscape Painting and the American Tradition" will give the opening lecture for "Notations of Color: Oil Sketching in Maine," a special two-month exhibit of landscape painting, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Bates College Museum of Art. A reception inaugurating the exhibition will follow Arthur's talk. The public is invited to attend both events free of charge.

"Notations of Color: Oil Sketching in Maine," a special two-month exhibit of landscape painting, will be on view in the Bates College Museum of Art from Aug. 28 to Oct. 30. The exhibit features small-scale oil sketches by more than 40 American landscape painters of the late 19th and 20th century.

Live documentary on Holocaust memorial dance theater to be performed

The Bates Dance Festival presents The Ivye Project: A Live Documentary by Tamar Rogoff Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. The performance is free to the public. Tamar Rogoff will present her "live" documentary using slides, video and the 1935 diary of her father to recreate The Ivye Project, a large scale, site-specific dance theater piece at the Holocaust memorial in the woods of Belarus in the summer of 1994.
Chainon to perform Franco-American music, storytelling

Chainon, a fiddle, accordion and mandolin trio, specializing in traditional Franco-American music and storytelling, performs July 30 at 6 p.m. on the Bates quadrangle. The performance is part of the Bates Midsummer Concert Series, and the public is invited to attend free of charge.

The Bates Dance Festival presents the return of the innovative Doug Elkins Dance Company Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. in Schaeffer Theater. As the highlight of the Bates Dance Festival season, an international ensemble of dancers performs HOT FEET, an evening of American jazz, French- Canadian step, Afro-fusion and jazz tap July 31 at 8 p.m. in the Lewiston Middle School Auditorium, located on Central Avenue. Tickets for the performance are priced at $14 and $8 (for full-time students and seniors) and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 207-786-6161. Following a sold-out show in 1997, ticket buyers are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.
