A politics major and education minor, Nora Hanagan ’13 of Singapore received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for work in Turkey.

Hanagan was born in New Hampshire and grew up in Singapore, an experience that taught her the educational potential of cross-cultural encounters. Working with Somali refugee children in an English Language Learners course in Lewiston as part of the coursework for her education minor at Bates enabled her to put this potential into practice.

“From my honors thesis research about the educational system in Turkey, I know that my cultural insights would directly translate to my work with Muslim students there,” she says.

After her Fulbright experience, Hanagan hopes to attend a dual-degree program that will lead to a doctorate in law and a master’s in education. Then, she says, “I look forward to starting my own adventure overseas, as my parents did when they moved us to Singapore and started teaching.”
