Maxwell of Newton, Mass., the daughter of an architect, makes photographs that bear clear references to architecture.

Yet her concerns are more than merely formal. “I deconstruct memories,” she says. “My images explore how memory intimately connects physical space and emotion.” Maxwell uses a Holga camera, whose sparse controls and basic lens force the artist to exploit intuition and enjoy the element of chance.
