Goose Cove Orchestra opens Bates Contradance Series

The Bates College Freewill Folk Society opens the 1997-98 Contradance Series with The Goose Cove Orchestra and caller Greg More at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. General admission is $4 and $2 for students and seniors. Soft-soled shoes are recommended.
Cornel West to discuss race at Bates

Cornel West, one of the nation's most eminent scholars, will address the topic of race in our society at the inaugural Bates Fall Forum at 4 p.m. Sept. 12, in the Alumni Gymnasium. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
Jazz trio to perform at Bates

New maintenance center to be dedicated

The new physical plant building at Bates College will be dedicated Wednesday at noon in a ceremony off of Russell Street behind Merrill Gymnasium.
Kessler receives book award

Mark A. Kessler, professor of political science at Bates College, has received the Best Treatment of Women and Minority Groups in a Political Science Text award from the Women's Caucus of the American Political Science Association. Kessler was honored for The Play of Power (St. Martin's Press, 1996), a textbook he co-authored that concerns the integration of women and minorities into the U.S. government and political system.
Voting rights advocate to speak at Bates

Avila, a litigator and advocate in the field of voting rights law, will deliver a lecture titled "The Voting Rights Act: Affirmative Action in Levelling the Political Playing Field" as part of the Creative Approach to Public Policy lecture seriesat 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10, in the Edmund S. Eck, award-winning author of Encountering God: A Spiritual Journey from Bozeman to Banaras, will deliver a lecture titled Multireligious America: New Arguments, New Opportunities, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. The public is invited to the 1997-1998 Rayborn Lindley Zerby Lecture in Contemporary Religious Thought and admission is free.
Dartmouth president to speak at Bates convocation
