On Nov. 2, the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area (BMMCA) Corporation, which owns the coastal research area administered by Bates College, received the Partnership Service Award from the Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District.

For Bates College, a $5.5 million grant to Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory (MDIBL) will translate into many more biomedical research opportunities for students and support for an expanded network of biomedical researchers. The National Institutes of Health grant was announced Tuesday (10/30/01) in Salisbury Cove, home of MDIBL.

Bates College, and its community partner LA Excels, have received a grant of up to $80,000 to support 10 community research fellowships for the summer of 2001 and 2002 for Bates College students.

A group of Bates, Bowdoin and Colby college faculty and students, joined by a colleague from the University of the West Indies, will gather to participate in a day-long conference and roundtable, "Scientific Knowledge, Culture and Political Economy: The Caribbean and The Americas," Friday, May 4, in Chase Hall Lounge on Campus Avenue at Bates College.

Lewiston Middle School (LMS) will host its first Cultural Heritage Night Thursday, April 25, in the school's cafeteria. The event will feature presentations about Franco-American and Somali heritage and displays by Bates College international students, who will share their traditions, music and dress.

Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges are pleased to introduce Maine's first statewide online library catalog. On January 4, the Maine Info Net system was turned on and the Colby, Bates and Bowdoin library collections, with more than two million items, became available to participating libraries throughout the state.

The opening ceremony for the "Where's Rumford" photographic exhibit will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library, 70 Campus Ave. The exhibit is open to the public free of charge.

The Bates College Office of Admissions, with a grant from the Maine Humanities Council, will offer two Community Humanities Seminars for 30-40 intellectually curious and motivated high school students. The two groups, one based in Lewiston at Bates College and the other based in Paris, Maine, will meet one evening per week for five weeks.

Performing a program of American composers, including works by George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman will give the final performance of the 1999-2000 Bates College Concert series at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 2, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall.
