Bates seeks collaborative K-12 proposals for math and science grants

Bates College is looking to Maine teachers and school administrators, as well as the college’s own students and faculty, to propose initiatives designed to improve education in mathematics and the sciences.

Second annual CBB Diversity Conference to be held

On March 1 and 2, Bates will host the second annual CBB Diversity Conference, a program of workshops, lectures and performances organized by the students of Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges. Titled In Our Backyard: Embracing Diversity in Our Communities, the event is free and open to the public.

King Day events feature prominent theologian

James H. Cone, America’s pre-eminent black theologian, is the keynote speaker for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances at Bates College. Scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in Alumni Gymnasium, Cone’s address is part of a celebration of King’s life and work that includes performances, workshops and a debate between Bates and Morehouse College. All events are open to the public free of charge.

Bates conservation area awarded for service

On Nov. 2, the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area (BMMCA) Corporation, which owns the coastal research area administered by Bates College, received the Partnership Service Award from the Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District.

Bates partners with Mount Desert Island laboratory in $5.5 million NIH grant

For Bates College, a $5.5 million grant to Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory (MDIBL) will translate into many more biomedical research opportunities for students and support for an expanded network of biomedical researchers. The National Institutes of Health grant was announced Tuesday (10/30/01) in Salisbury Cove, home of MDIBL.

Bates awarded grant to fund ten community service fellowships for students

Bates College, and its community partner LA Excels, have received a grant of up to $80,000 to support 10 community research fellowships for the summer of 2001 and 2002 for Bates College students.

Bates to host conference on the Caribbean and the Americas

A group of Bates, Bowdoin and Colby college faculty and students, joined by a colleague from the University of the West Indies, will gather to participate in a day-long conference and roundtable, “Scientific Knowledge, Culture and Political Economy: The Caribbean and The Americas,” Friday, May 4, in Chase Hall Lounge on Campus Avenue at Bates College.
