The conference's nearly three dozen presenters include healthcare workers from across the country and beyond; faculty in diverse disciplines from Bates and other colleges; and interpreters, social workers, counselors and other experts in breaching cultural factors that impede refugee access to healthcare.

Bates College opens its 145th academic year on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with Convocation ceremonies welcoming the approximately 500 members of the Class of 2014. President Elaine Tuttle Hansen and Professor Marcus Bruce, chair of the Bates religious studies department, are the featured speakers, with Hansen giving an address on How We Decide and Bruce focusing on A Shared Vocation that the new students are entering into.

One of America's most gifted dancemakers, Doug Varone returns to the Bates Dance Festival for his sixth creative residency since 1992. Varone's exceptional company performs stunning new works including "Lux," "Castles" and excerpts from a work in progress, "Chapters from a Broken Novel." Performances take place at 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, July 15 and 17, in Bates College's Schaeffer Theatre, 305 College St.
