Bates library accepting food for fines

From now through the holidays, Bates students, faculty and staff are being asked to bring back overdue books and videos to the college's George and Helen Ladd Library and, instead of paying fines, donate food for the needy. All donations will be delivered to the Good Shepherd Food Pantry.

Bates community gathers to honor Rosa Parks

In honor of Rosa Parks' legacy of leadership and life contributions to the struggle for civil and human rights, the Martin Luther King Day Committee and the Multicultural Center of Bates College held a program in memoriam and appreciation from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the Benjamin Mays Center.

Bates to hold vigil for latest natural disaster victims

Members of the Bates College community will hold a vigil for victims of the earthquake in Pakistan and the hurricane in Central America at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the Bates College Chapel, College Street. The public is invited to participate in this gathering, sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain.

Fulbright scholar examines Muslim world during Bates residency

Ijaz Shafi Gilani, an expert on Pakistani public opinion and international relations, visits Bates College from Oct. 3 through Nov. 11. A Fulbright visiting specialist with the "Direct Access to the Muslim World" program, Gilani is professor and dean of the faculty of social sciences at International Islamic University in Islamabad, Pakistan. He also heads Gallup Pakistan, an opinion and marketing research firm.

20-year Bates College study of optional SATs finds no differences

Students discuss Katrina's effects on New Orleans and the nation

Bates College students enrolled in the course "Afroambiente" ("Black Environment"), taught by Associate Professor of Spanish Baltasar Fra-Molinero, will give a multimedia presentation on the effects of Hurricane Katrina on both New Orleans and the United States at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29, in Room 204 of Carnegie Science Hall, Campus Avenue. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

For the fourth year, Bates College students are coordinating a program that matches fellow students with volunteer opportunities in the Lewiston-Auburn region. Seniors all, the four student volunteer fellows at Bates during the 2005-06 academic year are Emily Hoffer of Danville, Vt.; Sarah Mengel of Westport, Conn.; Christopher Petrella of Somers, Conn.; and Katie Seamon of Leverett, Mass.
