Home-schooled Applicants

Aligned with its historical mission of recruiting applicants of various backgrounds, Bates College welcomes home-schooled students to apply for admission. In order to properly understand your academic history and preparation for the Bates classroom, the Office of Admission asks that the following material supplement your application:

1. Interview

Bates strongly encourages all home-schooled applicants to interview with an Admissions staff member so that the student can properly explain and expand upon their academic preparation for Bates College. If you are unable to visit campus for an interview, you can schedule an interview with an alumni in you area here.

2. Documentation

Bates requires that all home-schooled applicants submit an academic portfolio which includes the following: (1) a detailed list of the courses taken (2) a description of each course including required reading and texts and (3) evidence of laboratory experience in science courses. This portfolio can be mailed to the Office of Admission, or emailed to admission@bates.edu.

3. Recommendations:

Home-schooled applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation. One letter of recommendation must be written by the applicant’s parent,  primary instructor, or head of their home school network.  Two additional letters of recommendation must be written and submitted by non-relatives who can speak to the applicant’s academic and personal strengths. Sample recommenders include coaches, employers, mentors, or private instructors.
