Call for Proposals

Important deadlines:

Priority deadline for oral presentations and funding: April 7th, 2026

Decisions: April 15th, 2026

Final registration due: April 30th, 2026 or until full

The Program in Africana and the Program in Digital & Computational Studies (DCS) at Bates College are pleased to announce AfroAlgorhythms: A Symposium on Race, Data Science, and AI. This symposium honors the relationships between Black studies, the data-driven technological world, and our joint search for justice. We invite you to join us in an intellectual exploration of data, activism, community partnerships, knowledge production, artificial intelligence, research, and storytelling on May 14 – 15th, 2026, at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

We now write to invite abstract proposals for oral and poster presentations. We have a limited number of travel awards available for those who apply to deliver oral presentations. We will prioritize these travel awards for early-career researchers (recent PhDs or graduate students near PhD completion) whose research is of particular interest to the theme of the symposium. Tuesday, April 7th is the deadline for priority consideration of oral presentations and funding.

The decisions for proposals submitted by April 7th will be communicated by April 15th, 2026. However, the call for proposals will remain open until registration is at capacity.

For presentation proposals, have a title, abstract, and keywords ready. For those applying for a travel award, please have ready a pdf of your CV and a response to the following question: “Why are you interested in attending AfroAlgorhythms at Bates College?”

Please complete the registration to confirm attendance. Registration is free.
