Plain cold spaghetti with red sauce. Grease, the movie musical. Plus some scatting.

That’s just some of what Ella Blum ’24 of South Salem, N.Y., was thinking about — and talking about — during a recent practice when the field hockey forward was mic’d up.

Blum is a sociology major, a forward for the Bates field hockey team, and has a talent for keeping things light during practice.

Whether it’s serenading a teammate with a movie song (Summer Gordon ’26 of North Andover, Mass.), discussing dubious dinner menu plans, or checking in with head coach Dani Kogut on the possible addition of a “beep-bop-ba-doo-bop corner,” there’s no lull in the action for Blum.

It’s clear she’s “having a blast,” but when the going gets serious, so does she, chasing the ball and hyping up her teammates every chance she gets.

The beep bop ba doo bop corner will have to wait.
