The 2010 Bates honorands are: Rennie Harris, the choreographer who brought hip hop to the mainstream world of dance; James McCarthy, a scientist recognized internationally for helping to communicate the science of climate change; Jane Pauley, the veteran television journalist; Elizabeth Strout, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and 1977 Bates graduate; and Teresa Woodruff, a researcher responsible for pioneering work in the care of women who will become infertile due to cancer treatment.

Renowned journalist and political activist Andrew Sullivan will speak at Bates College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. His topic: "The Politics of Homosexuality."

Iconoclastic journalist Christopher Hitchens, known for his trenchantly witty critiques of hypocrisy and entrenched political power, presents a lecture titled "Is Islam the Enemy?" at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Pettengill Hall. The public is invited to attend free of charge the talk, sponsored by the psychology department as part of a series of events connected to the observance of the one-year anniversary of Sept. 11.

Mark Dowie, author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book "Losing Ground: American Environmentalism at the Close of the Twentieth Century," will deliver a lecture titled "Faded Green: American Environmentalism at the Dawn of the New Millennium"at 7 p.m. September 29, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.
