Bates King Day offers 'Old Roots, New Struggles' theme

The Rev. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., Morehouse College professor of religion, is the keynote speaker for the 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances at Bates College. Classes at the college are canceled and special programming is scheduled throughout the day with an emphasis on the theme "Modernizing King: Old Roots, New Struggles." Scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in the Bates College Chapel, Carter's address is part of a celebration of King's life and work that includes performances, art exhibitions, workshops and orations. In recognition of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and to celebrate multiculturalism and diversity in a local community school, the Bates College Center for Service-Learning and the University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC) will co-sponsor a "read-in" by faculty, staff and students for grades 4-6 at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, and Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Martel Elementary School on Lisbon Street in Lewiston.

In celebration of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the Bates College Center for Service-Learning and Lewiston-Auburn College will co-sponsor a "read-in" by faculty, staff and students for grades 2-6 at 9:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Longley Elementary School on Birch Street in Lewiston. In case school is cancelled due to snow, the read-in will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27.

In commemoration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, and in an effort to encourage literacy, more than 120 students, faculty and staff from Bates College will hold a "read-in" for youngsters in grades K-3 classrooms in Lewiston and Auburn schools on Thursday and Friday .
