Dean Michael Martinez is Associate Dean of Multicultural Enrollment and Assistant Dean of Student Transition, informally called “Swing Dean” – an exciting post he shares with Dean Carmita McCoy. The Swing Deans – as featured in the Jan 2011 addition of the Chronicle of Higher Education (http://chronicle.com/article/These-Recruiters-Keep/125778/), rotate positions year to year from Admission to the Dean of Students Office.
Prior to moving to Maine, Dean Martinez was executive director of a nonprofit college access program that served public high schools in Dallas and Wichita Falls, Texas. The innovative spirit of the “Swing Dean” position and his desire to understand college access from both the secondary school and the higher education perspectives ultimately drew him to Bates College.
Born in Oklahoma, raised in Texas, Dean Martinez received a B.A. in Religion from Princeton University in New Jersey in 2005. Among his many hobbies, he enjoys photography and working in collaboration with his mother, a long-time kindergarten teacher, to write and illustrate children’s books. He has traveled extensively throughout the world to destinations including Europe, Asia and Central America. In addition to his work at Bates, he currently serves on the board of directors of the Maine Humanities Council.
