1. Commencement Processional
The processional is led by Mace Bearer and Professor of Sociology Sawyer Frederick Sylvester
2. President’s Welcome
President A. Clayton Spencer welcomes the gathering: “This is the moment we gather as a community to celebrate the accomplishments and aspirations of the Class of 2013, when they let us dream with them about what they will do and who they will become.”
3. Senior Address
As he did for his friends in the days before Commencement, Thomas James Holmberg III offers a love letter to Bates.
4. Presentation of Honorands
President Spencer welcomes “four extraordinary individuals with whom our graduates will share the distinction of a Bates degree”: William Cronon, Elaine Tuttle Hansen, Gary Hirshberg and Vivian Pinn.
5. Commencement Address
Gary Hirshberg, co-founder and chairman of Stonyfield Farm Organic Yogurt, tells the graduates: “The bottom line is that many of the so-called experts have been wrong and now need to be second-guessed. And that is actually your job.”
6. Presentation of the Candidates for Degrees and Conferral of Degrees
Bachelor’s degrees are presented to 436 students: 234 women and 202 men, including 39 from Maine, 178 from the other five New England states, 171 from 28 other U.S. states, and 48 international students from 29 countries.
7. Alumni Association Welcome and Presentation of Senior Gift
Alumni Association President Jennifer Lemkin Bouchard ’99 welcomes the new alumni: “For the rest of your lives, you and your classmates will be members of a community of 24,000 proud Bates alumni.” And, the Class of 2013 Senior Gift totals nearly $18,000 with a 92 percent participation.
The Rev. William E. Blaine-Wallace urges the graduates to shun complacency and stay in touch with the inner voices that urge something better.
