Brooks Quimby Debate Council hosts annual high school tournament

For the fifth consecutive year, the Brooks Quimby Debate Council hosted a Maine high school forensics tournament at Bates College. Approximately 170 students and 70 judges from 23 schools took part in the all-day event on Saturday, Nov. 17. A scheduled tournament in the 2007-08 season of the Maine Forensics Association, the judged competition featured events in Speech, Debate and Student Congress.
College hosts North American Debating Championships Jan. 26-28

The Brooks Quimby Debate Council will host the 2007 North American Debating Championships at Bates College, Jan. 26-28. Known as "NorAms," the competition is the top debating championship in North America, held on an alternating basis between the United States and Canada since 1991.

Christopher Laconi '05 wins Harvard Kennedy School fellowship

A year away from academe proved no disadvantage for Christopher Laconi '05. Shortly before graduation, Laconi was accepted by Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government to pursue a master’s in public policy. But Laconi, a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, deferred matriculation one year so that he could travel in Europe "for work and pleasure" and then consult for nonprofits in Boston.
Special debate to be held on hate speech code

The Brooks Quimby Debate Council is hosting a special public debate at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives on the resolution: "This House believes that Bates College should institutionalize a hate speech code."
Bates debates Yale in 'ultimate showdown'

Billed as the "ultimate showdown between two of the best debate teams in the country," the Brooks Quimby Debate Council debates the Yale University team on the issue, "Is terrorism, as a philosophical construct, a just form of warfare?" Open to the public free of charge, the rhetorical match begins at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave.

On the heels of impressive performances by its debaters in the United Kingdom last month, Bates College sends five teams to this year's World Universities Debating Championships in Dublin, Ireland, from Dec. 27 through Jan. 4.

For the third consecutive year, the Brooks Quimby Debate Council hosted a Maine high school forensics tournament. Approximately 315 students took part in the all-day event on Saturday, Nov. 19. A scheduled tournament for the 2005-06 season of the Maine Forensics Association, the judged competition featured events in speech, Lincoln-Douglas and public forum debate and student congress. The MFA promotes the development of articulate leadership among secondary students throughout the state.

As a warm-up for a Bates College-hosted national debate tournament, the Brooks Quimby Debate Council debated Harvard University on the issue "The United States has a moral obligation to spread democracy around the world."
