Bates, Guiding Stars to provide nutritional guidance for campus dining

Known for its progressive food-service practices, Bates has announced a pioneering partnership with the highly regarded nutrition navigation system Guiding Stars. First implemented in 2006 and now used in some 1,400 grocery stores, the science-based Guiding Stars system rates foods with zero to three stars highlighting items according to good, better or best nutritional value, respectively.

College offices closing at 2.p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, due to weather

Due to inclement weather, Bates College offices will close at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 28. Only personnel designated in advance by the director of the department as "essential" should report for work. Dining services will be available.

And the “fruit of the forest” pies that my father purchases through some sort of mystery pie-drive at the March of Dimes. I feel as though they should be selling folic acid candies or something, not necessarily pie but fruit of the forest has become a family staple for us. The name is the most mysterious part of this pie, forget that it came from the March of Dimes. What exactly are fruits of the forest? My personal hypothesis is that the pie is comprised of apples and raspberries and such and that whoever was in charge of these pie titles just liked the alliteration. I mean, we buy it. I’d buy it for the ingenious alliteration, who cares if it makes sense or not?

Harvest meal & Break

The Harvest Meal is Bates’ own little Thanksgiving feast. It’s the school’s way of sending Batesies off to vacation happy and full of delicious food. The dining staff decorates all of Commons with festive decorations (including Christmas Trees, Ice Sculptures, and many other holiday-themed items) and sets up a Thanksgiving buffet with all the trimmings. One of the campus community's favorite gatherings, Bates' annual Harvest Meal is nearly upon us. The buffet dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Commons. Dessert and a "Trashion Fashion Show," a green-minded event where Bates people display apparel they have made from discarded materials, follows in the Gray Athletic Building.
