Bates junior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan continued to prove that she is one of the top throwers in New England at any division level, as well as one of the top throwers in all of Division III last weekend at the Open New England Indoor Championships at Boston University.

Pride and joy was evident in longtime Bates throwing coach Joe Woodhead's words and, yes, on his face too, when the longtime Bates throwing coach was feted prior to the annual Maine Men's Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships Saturday evening.

Bates College senior Noah Gauthier claimed first place in the men's weight throw Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, winning his first national championship and the first by a Bates athlete since 2006.

A year ago, Bates College senior Keelin Godsey set the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships record in the women's hammer throw, at 195 feet and 4 inches. On Friday at Benedictine University, Godsey's hammer traveled far beyond that mark all day long, en route to winning a second straight NCAA championship in his best event.

Bates College senior Keelin Godsey again proved to be one of the top throwers in the NCAA at any division Thursday at the Penn Relays, finishing second in the hammer throw amongst solely Division I competition.

Kelly Godsey (Parker, Colo.) was a one-Bobcat show at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, as her first-place finish in the hammer throw and second-place finishes in the shot put and discus tallied all 26 of Bates' points, giving the Bobcat team eighth place at the meet, hosted by Wartburg College.

Athletic teams at Bates are on a brief hiatus for exams this week. Contests will resume on Jan. 3 with the women's basketball team heading to Williamstown, Mass., for the Williams Tournament. But it's been a tremendous first month of the winter sports season for the Bobcats, with several teams earning national recognition.
