Classical concert at Bates, then to Carnegie Hall

Scott Murphree, baritone, and Alvin Novak, pianist, will perform commissioned works by contemporary composers Virgil Thomson, Paul Bowles, Ned Rorem, John Gruen and Francis Poulenc for this year’s Alice S. Esty concert Friday, March 2, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

Bates College students compose computer music

Seventeen Bates College student composers enrolled in “Computers, Music and the Arts,” a course taught by William Matthews, the Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music, will give a concert of new work using digital recording, sampling and synthesizers at 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall on the Bates campus. Modern dance at Bates celebrates 30 years

The Bates College Modern Dance Company, founded and directed by Marcy Plavin, lecturer in dance, will celebrate its 30-year anniversary with a concert performance, titled Slightly Hysterical (So, You Think This Has Been Easy?) at at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 20, in Schaeffer Theater, 305 College St. Admission is free, but no reservations are accepted. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
