FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bates to host Seventh Annual Writer's Harvest

LEWISTON, Maine -- Poet Sonia Sanchez, author of "Does Your House Have Lions?" (1997), will read from her work at Bates College during the Seventh Annual Writers Harvest Author Reading Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. in Chase Hall Lounge. The public is invited to attend and donations will be accepted. Proceeds will benefit the hungry as part of the Writer's Harvest program sponsored by Share Our Strength (SOS).

Combining political activism with a notable career as a writer and teacher, Sanchez teaches at Temple University and is widely known for her performances as a reader. She is the author of many books of poetry, including "I've Been a Woman: New & Selected Poems" (1981) and "homegirls and handgrenades" (1984).

Each fall, Writers Harvest brings together more than 2,000 writers to fight hunger and poverty by reading from their works in more than 600 bookstores, college campuses and community centers around the country. SOS distributes 100 percent of event donations to statewide anti-hunger and anti-poverty efforts.

SOS works to alleviate and prevent hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. Since its founding in 1984, the organization has contributed more than $45 million in grants to more than 1,000 anti-hunger and anti-poverty agencies.
