Gubernatorial candidates to debate at Bates Oct. 16

LEWISTON, Maine -- Maine's five candidates for governor will discuss their views in a televised debate at Bates College Friday, Oct. 16, at 9 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. Admission is by ticket only. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting Monday, Oct. 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bates College Office of Special Projects, 163 Wood Street, Lewiston. No phone reservations will be accepted.

Participating in the hour-long debate will be incumbent Gov. Angus King, Democratic nominee Tom Connolly, Republican nominee James Longley, Pat LaMarche of the Green Party and Bill Clarke of the Taxpayers Party. Moderated by WMTW-TV news anchor Jeannine Lauber and sponsored by the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at Bates College, the debate will be broadcast live on WMTW Channel 8 and WVII-TV Channel 7. The candidates will first field questions from panelists Patrick Greenlaw of WMTW, Carrie Blake of WVII and Adam Thompson, a Bates junior from Peaks Island. Questions will then be opened to the audience.
