Introduction to Africana Students Visit Local Barbers and Hair Stylists
Last fall, students in Introduction to Africana visited barbers and hair stylists from the Lewiston-Auburn area to explore the relationship between community and cultural identity. Organized around the theme of “Seeing and Being Seen,” the course highlighted the experiences of people of African descent living in the Americas. Drawing upon their visits, students collaborated with Professors Charles Nero and Joshua Rubin to produce a paper. The students’ experiences were recently highlighted in a profile from Bates News, and the paper can be accessed here.
