St. Mary Schola presents holiday concert of early music

The St. Mary Schola, a Maine ensemble of professional early-music singers and instrumentalists, brings its seasonal program Nowell Sing We to Bates College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

The Schola is an ensemble of 12 singers accompanied by violins, cello and harpsichord under the direction of Bruce Fithian. Nowell Sing We comprises medieval English carols, Spanish cantigas, the famous organum “Viderunt” by Pérotin, a Corelli sonata and motets by Schütz and Monteverdi. Readings in Middle English and poems celebrating the season will be sprinkled throughout the program.

The Schola is based at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Falmouth. Fithian, a member of the University of Southern Maine music faculty, is well-known as a performer, composer and conductor.
