Terry Beckmann has been named vice president for finance and administration at Bates College, President Elaine Tuttle Hansen recently announced. Beckmann has also been re-elected by the college’s Board of Trustees to the position of treasurer, which she first assumed in January 2003.

Beckmann came to Bates in October 1998 as assistant vice president for financial affairs and controller. She was promoted to vice president for budgeting and accounting and controller in January 2000. Beckmann oversees the financial operations of the college, including investments, budgeting and accounting, physical plant, human resources, risk management and auxiliary services such as dining, the bookstore and print and mail.

“Terry will help Bates remain fiscally prudent as it meets its varied programmatic and building needs. We are pleased to have her in such a critical position of leadership,” President Hansen said.

Prior to coming to Bates, Beckmann served as chief financial officer at Concordia College for seven years. Before that, she was a senior audit manager at the New York-based Arthur Andersen & Co. One of a handful of female chief financial officers in higher education, Beckmann finds an educational environment favorable to women with a family. Compared to the corporate sector, she says, “higher education tolerates flexibility and allows for a better balance between work and family.”

A licensed certified public accountant in New York, Beckmann received her B.A. in mathematics from Mount Holyoke College in 1978 and an M.B.A. in accounting from Pace University in 1980.
