Portland Press Herald covers memorial for Judge Coffin '40

The Portland Press Herald shares stories from the May 8 memorial service for Frank Coffin ’40. Reporter Edward Murphy writes that the legendary federal judge was “a serious, respected judge when he stepped into a courtroom, but a warm and funny mentor in his chambers.” Former law clerk David M. Cohen, now a retired U.S. magistrate judge, remembers a lawyer walking into Coffin’s chambers, unannounced, to rip one of Coffin’s recent opinions. After listening a bit, Coffin walked over to a book of prior rulings and said, “If you thought that one was bad, you ought to read this one!” Coffin died in December at age 90.
