Thunderstorms on July 21 that unleashed torrents of rain and spawned three tornadoes in southern Maine also made its mark, happily minor, on the Hedge/Roger Williams construction site. Winds, which gusted up to 90 mph in some parts of the state, knocked over 40 feet of the fence around the site. "We called the contractor," Portland-based Wright-Ryan, "and the superintendent was nearby, and he just came over and put it back," says project manager Paul Farnsworth.

The renovated Garcelon Field, says project manager Mike Gustin, will feature flagpoles behind the scoreboard. "Now you’ll just be able to look across the field," Gustin says, instead of having to turn your head 180 degrees for the sake of patriotism. "It’ll be nice."

AXIS Dance Company presents Maine premieres at dance festival

With Young Dancers Workshop, festival bridges gap in dance education

Five days a week for three weeks in June and July, 100 student dancers spend hours perfecting their technique in studios, gymnasiums and classrooms around the Bates campus. These accomplished students come from the U.S. and abroad to attend the Young Dancers Workshop, part of the nationally acclaimed Bates Dance Festival.

COCo Dance Theatre brings Caribbean flavors to Bates Dance Festival

Incorporating the textures of Caribbean performance with African and American sensibilities, Cynthia Oliver's COCo Dance Theatre performs its current evening-length work at this summer's Bates Dance Festival. Performances take place at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 23 and 24, in Bates College's Schaeffer Theatre, 305 College St.

Dance festival presents Varone company with stunning new work
