Poet Mathis featured in Writers Harvest reading

Bates theater department offers 'House of Blue Leaves'

Often viewed as playwright John Guare's most popular and important work, "The House of Blue Leaves" is the major fall theater production of the Bates College theater department. Directed by Professor of Theater Paul Kuritz, "Blue Leaves" will be performed at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 5-6 and 12-13, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Nov. 7 and 14.

Elections 2004: The Last Push

"Have you voted today?" asked senior Katie Franich as she greeted classmates entering Chase Hall for lunch. Franich, of Milton, Mass., was one of a group of Bates students who participated in a nonpartisan election-day canvass to encourage their peers to go to the polls and vote. She wore an oversized T-shirt that read: "Make them pay attention to us. VOTE November 2."

Club women's hockey team to participate in tournament in Estonia

The Bates College women's club ice hockey team has been selected to represent the United States at the Baltic Blast & Thanksgiving Day Tournament in Tallinn, Estonia. Other competitors include teams from Great Britain, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, Japan, Finland and Sweden.

Panel to discuss U.S. relations with Middle East and South Asia

George Mitchell, Vanessa Kerry stump for John Kerry

In next Tuesday's presidential election, Americans have a choice between "fear and hope," former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell told an audience of about 100 at Bates College at midday Thursday, Oct. 28. Speaking in support of Sen. John Kerry and presented by the Bates Democrats, the Maine Democrat was the one of the latest in a series of notable figures campaigning here on behalf of the presidential candidates.

The exhibition "Multicultural Center Retrospective: Eight Years of Diversity Programming" opens Thursday, Oct. 28, with a 6 p.m. reception whose guests include the author and attorney Derrick Bell, featured in a 7 p.m. talk commemorating the historic Brown vs. Board of Education decision. The public is invited to attend free of charge the reception and the lecture, held in Chase Hall Gallery and Chase Hall Lounge respectively, Campus Avenue, Bates College.
