Award-winning poets Pamela Alexander '70 and X. J. Kennedy P'86 and '94 read from their work in celebration of the inauguration of the John Tagliabue Poetry Fund at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave., Bates College. A book signing and reception will immediately follow the reading, and the public is invited to attend at no charge.

In winning the 2008 Kroepsch Award for Excellence in Teaching, writer-in-residence Robert Farnsworth won praise from current and former students, including two alums who are prizewinning poets themselves. Farnsworth will deliver the Kroepsch address, "Psst!: Poems Teach Themselves," on Feb. 13.

Each spring, the College Store publishes a list of good summer reads suggested by members of the Bates community. In a new twist this year, submitters were also asked to suggest that one book they'd like to have with them if they were shipwrecked on a deserted, tropical island for several months. So, look for a few titles for desert-island reading in this, the 11th annual "Non-required Reading List, or Good Reads for Leisure Moments."

Four honorary degree recipients will speak at Bates College's 141st commencement, on May 27. The honorands are children's book author Eric Carle, singer-songwriter Corey Harris '91, inventor-entrepreneur Dean Kamen and actor and author Anna Deavere Smith.

The Social Construction of Free Trade: The European Union, NAFTA, and Mercosur, an analysis written by Bates College sociologist Francesco Duina, has been named an "Outstanding Academic Title" by the editors of Choice magazine, published by the Association of College & Research Libraries. Friday, March 23, Duina is scheduled to present the book in a store appearance at Books Etc., 38 Exchange St., Portland.

Four honorary degree recipients will speak at the 140th Commencement at Bates on May 28. They are Shakespearean scholar and cultural critic Marjorie Garber, AIDS researcher David Ho, historian David McCullough and choreographer Mark Morris. The 10 a.m. commencement ceremony takes place on the historic quad in front of Coram Library.
