Folksinger Iain MacKintosh to perform at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine --Known as the "quiet man of Scottish folkmusic," Iain MacKintosh will perform at Bates College Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. in Chase Hall Lounge. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

One of his country's most prominent folksingers, the Glasgow native has traveled extensively throughout his native Scotland, continental Europe and North America for more than 30 years. "Risks and Roses" and "Gentle Persuasion" are among the 13 albums he has recorded.

Although MacKintosh first learned to play music on the Highland bagpipes, his instrument of choice and on-tour companion for more than three decades is the five-string long-neck banjo. He also plays the concertina and harmonica.

"His music delivers a poignant message in a laid-back manner," according to the Fayetteville Observer-Times. Says MacKintosh, "I got that 'quiet man' image because I don't push too hard. I find it's more effective if I don't beat them over the head with social commentary. I make a quiet point and hope they listen to it tonight and think about it tomorrow."
