Sponsored Password Change Process

For users who have forgotten their password, or whose password has expired, the College provides the ability to change the password using the Sponsored Password Change Process. For most users the Sponsored Password Change Process can be initiated from either on or off campus.

On Campus

A user who is on campus and has forgotten her password can initiate the Sponsored Password Change Process by appearing at the IT Service Desk, located in the George and Helen Ladd Library, and presenting her Bates ID card or a valid government issued identification card which includes a picture (e.g., Driver’s License, Passport, State ID Card, or Military ID Card). The Bates ID card is the preferred identification. A member of the IT Service Desk professional staff will verify the identity of the user and ask for her username. The staff member will generate a Password Change Token for the user. This Password Change Token will be provided to the user along with instructions to use it to access the Password Manager and change her password before the Password Change Token expires—24 hours from generation.

NOTE: Password Change Tokens can only be used to access the Password Manager. They cannot be used as a temporary password to access other network resources such as e-mail or computer accounts.

Off Campus

A user who is off campus and has forgotten his password can initiate the process by calling the IT Service Desk at 207-786-8222. A member of the IT Service Desk professional staff will validate the information to verify the identity of the caller and generate a Password Change Token. The IT Service Desk will then copy and paste the Password Change Token into a text message that will be sent to the verified cell phone number or sent to an alternate email address that we have on  file.

If..
– a cell phone or alternate email address is not on file
– a user’s identification is unable to be verified
– The IT Service Desk is unable to talk to the user directly
the user will need to submit the Sponsored Password Change Form.

We will accept the form via fax or via email. The emailed version can either be scanned in w/ picture ID or a digital picture of the filled out form w/ a picture ID can be sent.

NOTE: Password Change Tokens can only be used to access the Password Manager. They cannot be used as a temporary password to access other network resources such as e-mail or computer accounts.

Sensitive Users

Information & Library Services has identified certain members of the staff as sensitive users, due to the responsibilities of their positions. In order for sensitive users to initiate the Sponsored Password Change Process they must appear at Network Administration, located at 110 Russell St., with their Bates ID card or a valid government issued identification card which includes a picture (e.g., Driver’s License, Passport, State ID Card, or Military ID Card). The Bates ID card is the preferred identification. A member of the Network Administration professional staff will generate a Password Change Token for the user. This Password Change Token will be provided to the user along with instructions to use it to access the Password Manager and change the user’s password before the Password Change Token expires-24 hours from generation.

NOTE: IT Service Desk does not have the ability to perform Sponsored Password Changes for sensitive users. Network Administration is the only department with the ability to sponsor password changes for sensitive users.

NOTE: There is no off-campus option for sensitive users. They must appear in person with proper identification.
