New Endowments

Evelyn and Charles R. Boothby Library Fund
Given by bequest of Charles R. Boothby ’26, in loving memory of his wife, Evelyn V. Boothby, to be used by the Library Committee without restriction, for the acquisition of reading, audio, and technological materials for the George and Helen Ladd Library, with preference in the fields of history and English.

Barbara M. Doane ’54 Scholarship Fund
Given by Barbara M. Doane ’54 in appreciation for the education she received at Bates College, with preference for a student planning a career in secondary education, particularly in social-studies teaching.

Frank and Ruth Glazer Music Scholarship Fund
Given by Ruth and Bates artist-in-residence Frank Glazer for a student majoring in music and interested in performance, composition, or musicology.

Mona Hodnett Kennedy ’16 and Frank E. Kennedy ’17 Scholarship Fund
Given by Joanne Kennedy Murray ’53 in honor of her parents, Mona Hodnett Kennedy ’16 and Frank E. Kennedy ’17, for student financial aid, with preference for a student demonstrating extraordinary financial need.

Recent Bequests

Berenice Belmore HC’21 $2,000
The widow of Carl W. Belmore ’21, her gift was added to the Annual Alumni Fund.

Charles R. Boothby ’26 $785,000
A teacher of English at Lincoln Univ. in Chester County, Pa., and for many years at the high school in Port Chester, N.Y., his bequest creates the Evelyn and Charles R. Boothby Library Fund.

Norman S. McCallister ’31 $18,835
The bequest of Norman S. McCallister ’42, Ed.M. ’38, professor of mathematics at Northeastern Univ., was added to the general scholarship endowment, as he requested.

Meredith “Pete” Burrill ’25 $5,000
The bequest of Meredith Burrill ’25, renowned geographer, recipient of an honorary Sc.D. from Bates in 1960, and always active in Bates affairs, was added to the H. Roger Arnold Scholarship Fund, originally given by Dr. Burrill in honor of his classmate.

Burtra Dresser Purinton Stanitis ’17 $5,000
Secretary to the dean of Yale Univ. and to the commandant of the Army War College, her first husband was classmate Arthur L. Purinton. Burtra Stanitis’ bequest was added to the Annual Alumni Fund in her memory.

Albert J. St. Denis ’44 $5,000
The bequest of Albert St. Denis ’44, education advisor for the U.S. government, is for scholarship aid and was granted in his name to a current Bates student as financial aid.
