Learning Goals for the Major

While progressing through the neuroscience curriculum at Bates, students can expect to achieve the following learning goals:

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of the structure, function, and origin of the nervous system, spanning molecular, cellular, systems, and behavioral levels.
  • Develop and apply laboratory skills in neuroscience, including experimental design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and the ethical conduct of research.
  • Effectively and accurately communicate neuroscience concepts, research findings, and interpretations through multiple formats and for diverse audiences.
  • Critically evaluate scientific claims, demonstrate information literacy to assess the validity of neuroscience research, and interrogate how historical and contemporary scientific practices have shaped neuroscience as a field.
  • Make connections between different disciplines that have historically contributed to our understanding of the brain and behavior, and appreciate the translational value of neuroscience to other domains.
