Providence Journal tells of Bou '14 and his Cambodian mother's sacrifices

Providence Journal sports columnist John Gillooly writes about Erik Bou, an incoming first-year Bates student from Cranston, R.I., who would seem to embody the American Dream at its simplest: “a multitalented athlete and good student gets accepted to an elite college.” But there has been “nothing simple” about Bou’s life. Instead, the complex story is about “a teenager who went from barely making it in the classroom to a student who will attend one the nation’s most prestigious colleges,” and about Bou’s own response to the great sacrifices of his mother, who escaped the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s but then faced more hardship in the U.S. View story from Providence Journal, July 20, 2010.
