Global Lens film series concludes with Brazilian film Margarette's Feast

The Global Lens film series at Bates College concludes with "Margarette's Feast", a film from Brazilian director Renato Falcão. The film will be shown at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec.11, and Sunday, Dec. 13, in the Olin Arts Center, Room 105, 75 Russell St.

Barbara Byers '10, a resident of Elkins, W.V., offered a performance native to West Java, Indonesia as part of an Oct. 7 presentation on student experiences made possible by the Phillips Student Fellowship program at Bates. Also presenting was Chomba Kaluba '10, originally from Mpika, Zambia, and now a resident of Long Island, Maine.

For its October 26, 2009 cover story, Newsweek magazine called on President Elaine Tuttle Hansen and four other thought leaders in American higher education to "debate the merits of a three-year degree and assess the state of higher education."
Rwandan genocide survivor, Berthe Kayitesi, to speak at Bates

Berthe Kayitesi, an author and a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, speaks on her experiences and the rebuilding of communities in post-conflict Rwanda at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Muskie Archives at Bates College, 70 Campus Ave. The lecture, titled "Tomorrow My Life: Orphans in Post-Genocide Rwanda," is open to the public and admission is free. It is part of the Civic Forum Series sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates.

Paul Solman, an economics, business and occasional art correspondent to "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" speaks at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Chase Hall, 56 Campus Ave. He offers two lectures on a common theme, "The Divided Self: Money, God and Neighbor." The Oct. 5 talk is titled "Spending Beyond Our Means and Are We Screwed If We Don't?" and the Oct. 7 talk, "IS Money The Root of All Evil?" The Right Rev. V. Gene Robinson, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire and the first openly gay, non-celibate bishop in a major Christian denomination, speaks at noon Thursday, Oct. 15, in the College Chapel, College Street. His talk is called "Religion and Gay Marriage: Why They Matter So Much."
