Bates Parents Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!

We are grateful for your commitment to Bates. Over the past few years, a record number of parents have participated as volunteers with the college in a range of roles. These extraordinary efforts by Bates families have helped the college achieve record-breaking participation in and contributions to the Parents Fund. Whether you are making welcome calls, Parents Fund calls, or hosting an event or internship, we appreciate your commitment to Bates.

We hope you will find an opportunity below that matches your interests. We are always available to answer questions and to help you get involved with Bates!

Please note: To support the college’s efforts to keep our campus healthy and safe, our team is currently working remotely. Our working hours are still 8am to 4:30pm EDT. Any emails received will be responded to within one business day. We are also happy to meet with you—whether via Zoom or over the phone —within those times. Our toll-free line (1-888-522-8371) is monitored regularly.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities

+Parents Fund Volunteers

Parents Fund volunteers contact other Bates families by phone or email to thank them for their gifts to Parents Fund or to invite them to join other families in supporting Bates. Unrestricted Parents Fund gifts provide immediate support to every aspect of Bates’ operating budget —including faculty salaries, curriculum development, athletics, and community service. Our volunteer tools and resources help volunteering for Bates fit your schedule and comfort level.

Parents Fund Committee volunteer:

  • Support the Bates Parents Fund with a gift of $1,000 or more.
  • Invite 5-7 other Bates families to make a gift to the Parents Fund and thank them for their support.
  • Participate in Parents Fund Committee meetings by phone/video conference and in person, as your schedule permits.
  • Attend on-campus and regional Bates events when you are able, encouraging other families in the area to join you.

To sign up as a Parents Fund Committee volunteer contact Emily Levine at elavine2@bates.edu.

+Parent Ambassadors

Parent Ambassadors volunteer in one or more of the following ways:

  • Support the Bates Parents Fund with a personally meaningful gift.
  • Make 10-14 welcome calls to incoming first-year families.
  • Serve as a “parent to parent” resource throughout the year for other Bates families, either generally or in your geographic area.
  • Attend on-campus and regional Bates events when you are able, encouraging other families in your area to join you.

To sign up as a Parent Ambassador contact Penney Ward at pward@bates.edu.

+Summer Welcome Reception Host

Summer Welcome Reception Hosts open their homes to welcome area parents and their incoming student for a gathering in July or August. Summer Welcome Receptions provide a casual setting for incoming students and their families an opportunity to connect with other incoming families in their area before arriving at Bates in the fall. Bates staff will provide event coordination and support.

+Purposeful Work Job Shadow Sponsor

Change a student’s life in just one day! Bates’ signature job shadow program helps students explore potential career paths by spending a day or two with an alumni or parent sponsor at their place of work. To learn more, contact Amy Jaffe at ajaffe@bates.edu.

+Purposeful Work Summer Internship Core Employer

Our internships help students identify their interests, deepen their skills, and build their networks in order to find meaningful work. As a Core Employer, you agree to hire a well-qualified Bates student for a minimum of 350 hours of work over the course of the summer. Your involvement will create a talent pipeline for your organization while exposing students to real-world experiences. To learn more, contact Beverly Veri at bveri@bates.edu.
