Bates Trustee Dervilla McCann

Among trustees recently elected to the Bates board is Dr. Dervilla M. McCann ’77 of Winthrop, Maine, a cardiologist and partner with Androscoggin Cardiology Associates and Maine Research Associates in Auburn. McCann is also the director of the cardiology division of St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and a member of the staff of Central Maine Medical Center, both in Lewiston.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Bates with a major in biology, McCann undertook additional science education at Columbia University. She was awarded an M.D. degree from Tufts University and went on to an internal medicine residency at New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital.

She then served in the U.S. Navy for nine years, attaining the rank of commander. Her naval service included a cardiology fellowship at the U.S. Naval Medical Center San Diego and work as director of the coronary care unit at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

McCann returned to Maine in 1996 and entered private practice. In 1999 she joined  Androscoggin Cardiology Associates and Maine Research Associates in Auburn, becoming a partner in 2000.  Also in 1999 she joined the staffs of Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.  She subsequently became co-chair of internal medicine and director of the cardiology division at St. Mary’s.

As an undergraduate, she was very active in dance. As an alumna, she has served Bates as a class officer, a member of class reunion committees, as an alumna volunteer in admission work, as a member of College Key (a Bates organization that supports various aspects of Bates life) and as a member of the advisory board for the Bates Dance Festival.
