Bates Athletics welcomes local youth for L/A Community Day

Bates Athletics hosts L/A Community Day on Saturday, Oct. 22, in conjunction with several home games against Middlebury College. The college invites all Lewiston and Auburn schoolchildren to these events, involving the local community in the NCAA's "Take a Kid to the Game" initiative. In addition to the Bobcat athletic contests, there will be youth clinics, campus tours and other fun family activities, as well as Auburn/Lewiston Fly Football games before the Bates football game and at halftime.

Civic Forums examine Androscoggin River, social entrepreneurship

The Civic Forum Series at Bates offers presentations about the Androscoggin River and about social entrepreneurship during October. Bowdoin College faculty members Michael Kolster and Matthew Klingle explore the Androscoggin River. The following week, a co-founder of the fair-trade coffee importer Equal Exchange is among four of the nation's leading social entrepreneurs who discuss their work.

Participants in an effort to provide humanitarian aid to Mexican migrants entering the U.S. will describe their work in a Bates College event at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Room G65 of Pettengill Hall, 4 Andrews Road (Alumni Walk). Claudia Aburto Guzman, associate professor of Spanish at Bates, leads this Public Works in Progress presentation titled Representations of Trails of Compassion: Volunteer Work at the U.S.-México Border.
