A pioneer in the field of African American women's history and chair of the Department of African American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park, Professor Sharon Harley is the keynote speaker for the 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances at Bates College.

Theme of unity shines through in Bates Convocation

Speakers who addressed the Convocation audience Sept. 6 offered ample food for thought to the incoming Class of 2009, from the historical evolution of academic freedom to life lessons implicit in the Bates education. But unity — as in unity of self and unity on campus — was a subtext for remarks by both the featured convocation speaker, the Rev. Peter J. Gomes '65, and President Elaine Tuttle Hansen. Gomes referenced a sermon on his first Sunday on campus, in 1961 during what was then called "Freshman Week," that stressed Bates' role in assembling the diverse components of character into "a life worth living." Hansen, meanwhile, called for a shared campus commitment to robust intellectual inquiry.

The Rev. Peter J. Gomes, named one of America's most influential preachers by Time magazine, opens the 151st academic year at Bates College with a convocation address at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, on the main quadrangle. In case of rain, the event will take place in Alumni Gymnasium.
Jane Comfort and Company perform at Bates Dance Festival

Jane Comfort and Company returns to the Bates Dance Festival to present Persephone and Underground River. Hailed by New York Times dance critic Ann Kisselgoff as "one of the most fertile minds in the theater of mixed forms," Comfort and her company perform in concert at 8 p.m. Friday, July 22, and Saturday, July 23, in Schaeffer Theatre, College Street.

Brendan Taaffe (shown), with Matt and Shannon Heaton, offers the final concert in the 2005 Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series. The 2005 Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series winds up on Aug. 11 with "Ireland Reclaimed," a program of Irish and Irish-influenced music by Brendan Taaffe, with Matt and Shannon Heaton. The concert starts at 6 p.m. in the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater, overlooking Lake Andrews at Bates. The rain site is the adjacent Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.
Keigwin + Company premieres at Bates Dance Festival

Keigwin + Company kicks off the five-week 2005 Bates Dance Festival performance series with a dazzling program of Maine premieres. Recently hailed as the "Best of 2004" by The New York Times, this hot, young troupe of formidable dancers performs works exploring contemporary life and pop culture with choreographic ingenuity and range. The festival presents Keigwin + Co. at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 16, in Schaeffer Theatre, College Street, Bates College. Bates announces speakers, honorary degree recipients for commencement

Five honorary degree recipients will speak at the 139th commencement at Bates on May 30. They are composer Thomas Jefferson "T.J." Anderson, theoretical biologist Lynn Margulis, entrepreneur and engineer Paul Soros and his wife, Daisy M. Soros, and NBC Nightly News anchor and managing editor Brian Williams.
Students offer fifth annual 'Vagina Monologues'
