Campaigning Rules

The BCSG Committee Selection Board maintains standards for participation in elections. Please find below campaigning rules for those running for student government positions.

  • No write-ins.
  • Social media campaigning permitted.
  • Posters, stickers, and flyers permitted.
    • Be mindful of college policy about where you are permitted to post flyers and posters (bulletin boards).
  • Do not pull down other candidates’ posters. 
  • You may not spend more than $30 on campaigning materials.
    •  If you do buy campaigning materials, you must supply a receipt to the Committee Selection Board by taking a picture and emailing it to bcsgcommitteeselection@bates.edu.
  • The Personal Expense Fund is available from Campus Life for individuals that don’t have the ability to spend their personal funds on the campaign. 
  • Campaigning in Commons is permitted. If you wish to Table in Commons email Kelly Perreault.
  • You may not campaign through listservs or Google Groups, or have other people campaign for you.
  • Campaigning through Bates Today is permitted.
  • MUST attend all official campaign events run by Committee Selection Board and Campus Life
    • If a Candidate cannot attend they must send a proxy to represent them
    • Failure of a candidate or their proxy to attend an official event will cancel the candidate’s ticket 
  • Students must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct
  • As a candidate, keep in mind you are a representative of a constituency of Bates students to the Bates and Lewiston-Auburn communities. As a potential student body leader, you should be mindful of your actions and behaviors, and how they reflect on you and others in our communities.
  • Be respectful of your fellow classmates and hold yourself accountable for your actions.
  • Do not smear another candidate’s campaign. 
  • Challenge the ideas not the person.
