At a time of radical climatic and environmental change, we aim to empower students to create a more just, livable, and compassionate world for human and more-than-human flourishing. Environmental Studies at Bates takes a social justice and interdisciplinary approach to preparing students with the knowledge and skills required to address today’s urgent social-ecological issues. Courses in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities equip students to explore the cultural, political, scientific, creative, and ethical aspects of environmental questions. Students approach questions in the major by developing more focused knowledge and methodological tools in their major track. Our graduates include artists, policy makers, and ecologists; architects, environmental lawyers, and public health experts; National Park rangers, journalists, social workers, and much more.
