The Teaching Assistants in German and Russian support the programs’ commitment to exploring language and culture as gateways to understanding the diverse societies of central and eastern Europe. Embedded in courses that emphasize communicative skills and cultural fluency, they help students connect classroom learning with authentic materials, events, and everyday practices from the German- and Russian-speaking worlds. Working closely with faculty and students, they foster an inclusive, intellectually engaged community that invites curiosity about history, society, and contemporary life in the region.

Their duties vary from course to course but may include leading weekly conversation/review sessions, working with students one on one or in small groups on writing assignments or projects, overseeing quizzes or tests, screening films and leading discussions, and tutoring students who need more help. The Teaching Assistants also lead the weekly language tables. In addition, teaching assistants are expected to participate in departmental events, host their own cultural activities, and in general serve as a resource for their language and culture.
