John R. Cole Prize for Outstanding Achievement in History

The John R. Cole Prize for Outstanding Achievement in History was established in honor of long-time Professor of History, John Cole. It provides awards to support student work, such as travel to archives or conferences or acquisition of research materials.

Students who wish to apply for the prize should submit:

1) a description of their research project (e.g. their thesis proposal) and the name of their faculty advisor for the project;

2) a short description of how they will use the funds being requested and how that will help them complete their research project;

3) a detailed, itemized budget. (See Sample Budget)

All materials should be submitted as Word or .pdf attachments by email to the History department chair.

Awards will be made three times a year, and application deadlines of October 1, February 1, and May 15. Juniors who wish to do research during the summer prior to their senior year are encouraged to apply at the May 15 deadline.
