Exemption 1: Educational Settings and Normal Educational Practices
Research, conducted in established or commonly accepted educational settings, that specifically involves normal educational practices that are not likely to adversely impact students’ opportunity to learn required educational content or the assessment of educators who provide instruction, is exempt from IRB review. This includes most research on regular and special education instructional strategies, and research on the effectiveness of or the comparison among instructional techniques, curricula, or classroom management methods.
If you are certain that this describes your research, please retain this information for your records to share as needed with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance, or authorized representatives of your sponsoring agency. If you have any questions or doubts, please feel free to contact the IRB.
