Over-the-hill hiker Lib MacGregor Crooker extended her mountaineering experience when she spent a week last June as a volunteer at the Mount Washington Weather Observatory. “My biggest adventure of the year,” she says, “was cooking for the observers.” The non-profit organization reports weather conditions and tests equipment for Mount Everest climbers and others. “It was great fun living up there for a week. I’m going again in November.” More than 70 people joined in the dedication of “Charlie’s Bridge,” built on the Bearcamp River Trail that runs from Sandwich to Tamworth, New Hampshire. Dedicated to the late Charlie Crooker, an inveterate climber who had worked on the trail, the bridge crosses the river where the water runs high in the spring. Friends and family joined in poetry, song, and a picnic lunch after traversing the new bridge…. We all share the sorrow of Cassie Poshkus McIntire whose husband, Merton, died in May. Cassie attended Reunion with her brother, Al Poshkus ’36.

On Upper Saranac Lake, N.Y., Marion and Jack Cushing celebrated 50 years of marriage on a camping trip with their four sons and their families…. Retired, but still doing personnel counseling, Bob and Nan Lord Daniels enjoy life on the Maine coast in Jonesport. In 1996 Nan was appointed registrar of voters and Bob wrote the software to computerize the voting list…. Ken Drummond would like to gather a list of classmates to correspond with e-mail addresses. His e-mail is lovebump@aol.com…. CarletonZeke” and Arline Sinclair Finch find retirement most amazing. In March 1996 Zeke was acting business manager for the Leominster (Mass.) school department. Arline enjoys caring for their younger grandchildren, church work, and visits at a nursing home…. After Reunion, Lyn and Clifford Skip” Gates not only celebrated their golden anniversary but also moved back to Maine from California in December 1995. In spite of a number of minor crises, neither settled nor unpacked at the time of writing, they enjoy the snow-filled woods, glorious sunsets, and the distant view of Mount Washington…. Alice “Penny” Gates Haughwout is the proud owner of a pig heart valve following open-heart surgery. She and her daughter have purchased a two-family house…. TravelerMary Guiney O’Leary went to Colorado, Connecticut, and Massachusetts visiting children and enjoyed a Caribbean cruise with Lee Jewell Ballard in March 1996. In her fund raising for the Bates Campaign, Mary reports great success and says, “Our College needs that firm financial support.”… Last summer, Lee Ballardhosted a mini-reunion at her cottage on Square Pond. Attending were Mary Guiney O’Leary, Miriam Dolloff Chesley, Clay and Nancy Farrell AdamsMary Hamlin March, Carleton and Arline Sinclair Finch. Later in August, “Mickey” Chesley hosted another mini-reunion with Lee Ballard, Mary O’Leary, Dick ’42 and Shirley Raymond Blanchard, Leslie Wight, and Jane Smith Lefebvre. Mickey is very busy with tape loom demonstrations and appearances…. In June 1996, Phyllis Jones Twichell joined the Peace Corps in Albania, where she teaches English at a foreign-language school in Shroder. She wrote of the many difficulties and cultural differences she has encountered…. Last summer, Jack and Betty Benoit Joyce reported from “hurricane central” on Cape Cod. After their 50th anniversary celebration in July, they attended Back-to-Bates ceremonies in October honoring the undefeated 1946 football team that went to the Glass Bowl…. Dan and Connie Wood Norte ’46 returned to Bates for her 50th Reunion. Since he retired, Dan has achieved his goal of a 1,000-meter swim at the local YMCA…. Ed Nutting is thrilled with the Reunion picture of third-floor Roger Bill freshmen — a small but distinguished slightly over-the-hill group…. Dick ’42 and Shirley Raymond Blanchard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by buying a computer. They now are learning how to use it!… Richard Smith sees 30 to 40 children daily in his work for the Blue Cross/Blue Shield HMO in Springfield, Mass. He and Gayle enjoyed a 1996 family gathering from all over the world on the occasion of granddaughter Dawn’s wedding in May…. “All my news is overshadowed by George’s death after 52 years of marriage,” wrote Christine Stillman Kolstad. We all send our love and heartfelt sympathy to her and her family…. Charles and Ruth Stone Gallagher celebrated their 50-year marriage this past year…. Ever since Ed and Polly Beal Tooker moved to a condo last June, they have been unpacking, sorting, and “shoehorning.” On their 50th anniversary they took a four-day trip to beautiful Mendocino, the California town famous for the house and coastline in Murder She Wrote…. Leslie Wight has no big news, but sends greetings to everyone…. Keith and Ruth Asker Wilbur ’46 celebrated both their 50th anniversary and Ruth’s 50th at Bates.

After Reunion, Don and Penny Gumpright Richter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family on a cruise to Bermuda. Later they joined the 50th reunion of the return of Don’s Navy ship, USS Agawam, then returned to Bates in September for the celebration of 100 years of intercollegiate Bates debating…. Following Reunion, Melvin and Rohna Isaacson Shoul went on an Elderhostel to Poland to visit Auschwitz and the Jewish quarters of Krakow. They had visited Hiroshima 25 years ago, and reflecting upon these 20th-century tragedies, Rohna hopes that when our grandchildren celebrate their 50th reunions, they can reflect on a century they can feel good about…. Herbert Knight is working on our Reunion documentary video. He is back playing golf after bypass surgery…. Anne Smith Nanavaty says Reunion was “outstanding and showed many hours, talents, and time contributed by our classmates.” In August she and Kris enjoyed a reunion with their five sons and their families…. Lou and Electra Zazopoulos Scliris were overwhelmed with this year’s Reunion: “Every minute we spent at Bates made us feel great.” Afterwards they traveled to Colorado and Wyoming. In Colorado they met with Gloria Finelli DeVoe and in New York City they tried unsuccessfully to reach Dave Wolynski.
