In an e-mail to the College in January, Ari Friedlaender writes that he’s living in Wilmington, N.C., and working for the Univ. of North Carolina at Wilmington and the National Marine Fisheries Service. He is also employed as a fisheries observer to monitor and report on the commercial fishing activities in North Carolina and human interaction with marine mammals. “I am on the beach, on the water, or in the air more days than not,” he writes. “I respond to strandings and perform necropsies from one to three times a week. North Carolina is a high-profile area for stranded marine mammals for a couple of reasons: there’s a local population of bottlenose dolphins that strands — often as a result of human interaction — and the outer banks of North Carolina stick out into the Atlantic, and some whale species that would otherwise not reach land strand out there.” Ari would enjoy talking to anyone who is interested or has questions about marine mammals…. Since last August, Kristin Gagne has been a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Southwest. Volunteers in social service agencies throughout Arizona and California, they work in domestic violence and homeless shelters, schools, medical clinics, AIDS ministries, refugee services, legal clinics, food banks and job placement….Karen LeComte writes from the Univ. of Vermont Medical School that all is going well. She would love to meet other Batesies “out there.” Jennifer Webber ’92 also is in the Medical School there…. And right there in Vermont, Nathan Webb is with Potter Simon Pearce in Quechee. Emily (Woodside) works in Woodstock as a marketing assistant at the Jewish Lights Publishing Co.
