Three appointed to Board of Trustees

President Elaine Tuttle Hansen has announced three appointments to the Bates College Board of Trustees: Steven A. Brown of Brookline, Mass., Sarah Risley Pearson of Evanston, Ill., and Jeremy M. Sclar, also of Brookline.

Brown is managing director of Braver Business Strategies LLC, a strategic consulting firm in Newton, Mass. Braver clientele includes architectural firms, construction and trades companies, technology firms, manufacturers, retailers, and sales and service firms.

Prior to his forming Braver, Brown was co-founder and managing director of Nolan Brown Partners LLC, a New Hampshire-based strategic consulting firm. He previously served as president of Harper W. Poulson Inc., a retail and commercial office products distribution company based in Boston.

Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Bates College in 1969 and a master’s degree in business administration from Suffolk University in 1971. He lives in Brookline with his wife, Jane, also a 1969 Bates graduate, and has two adult children.

Pearson is vice president for alumni relations and development at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She oversees a team of 175 staff and is responsible for all aspects of fundraising and alumni relations for six undergraduate schools, the graduate school, a Big 10 athletics organization and the university library and art museum. Pearson also provides oversight for staff members in the business, law and medicine professional schools.

Prior to her Northwestern appointment, Pearson served in development positions at the University of Chicago and Cornell, Boston and Harvard universities.

Pearson earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and theater at Bates in 1975 and a master’s degree in fine arts at Brandeis in 1977. She lives in Evanston, Ill., with her husband, Don Balcom, and their two children.

Sclar is president of W/S Development Associates, a real estate development and management company based in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Sclar currently serves as a trustee for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and for The Chestnut Hill School. He is a former board member of Waynflete School in Portland, Maine. He also serves on the boards of several private companies.

Sclar earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Bates in 1988. He and his wife, Kerry, a 1989 Bates graduate, live with their three children in Brookline and are actively involved with a number of charitable organizations.
