Routine Facade

The Bates College Modern Dance Company performs "Departure Point," its annual spring concert of new works, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 3; 5 p.m. Saturday, April 4; 2 p.m. Sunday, April 5; and 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, in Schaeffer Theater, 305 College St.

Admission for each performance is $6 for the general public and $3 for seniors and non-Bates students. For more information, please contact 207-786-6161 or visit www.batestickets.com.

The production is presented in two programs over four days. The dancers perform Program A on Friday and Sunday, and Program B on Saturday and Monday. The Friday performance follows the Mount David Summit, Bates' annual showcase of student achievement in academics, creative work and community-based research.

Totaling 13 dances in the two programs, the concert is the culmination of two dance composition courses. All the pieces were choreographed by students and the lighting designs were also created by students, participants in "The Aesthetics of Light" theater techniques course. More than 65 students are involved in the production including choreographers, designers, dancers and crew.

The choreographers are:

Seniors Samantha Coran of Philadelphia, Kelly Griffin of Turners Falls, Mass., Kolby Hume of Henniker, N.H., Jacob Lewis of Katonah, N.Y., Kimberly Russell of Old Lyme, Conn., and Emily Taylor of Scarborough, Maine;

Junior Barbara Byers of Elkins, W.Va.; sophomores Sarah O'Loughlin of Big Flats, N.Y., Claire Parker of Essex Junction, Vt., and Elizabeth Sweet of San Francisco;

And first-year students Victoria Lowe of New York City, Yasin Fairley of Newark, N.J., and Lindsay Reuter of Shrewsbury, N.J.

Though the programs were still being settled as this was written, Program A includes dances by Sweet, Fairley, Parker, Hume, O'Loughlin and Russell, who has two works on the program. Parker's "Routine Façade" includes "Just Step," music written by senior Joe Williams of Washington, D.C., and sophomore George MacDonald of Ossinin
