Bates Commencement 2015 Press Kit
The Bates Communications Office is making available the following resources to journalists reporting on college’s 149th Commencement, held Sunday, May 31.
The college conferred honorary degrees on four leaders in medicine, mathematics, American furniture design and athletics, including two iconic Mainers. The ceremony concluded with the graduation of 484 seniors, each of whom received a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree.
2015 honorary degree recipients were:

Manjul Bhargava, winner of the 2014 Fields Medal for mathematics and a professor at Princeton University, will give the commencement address
- Dr. Mark Abelson pioneering ophthalmologist whose research and work has led to dozens of new eye treatments and cures
- Thomas Moser, master Maine craftsman whose handmade furniture beautifies public spaces around the world
- Joan Benoit Samuelson Olympic gold medalist, Maine resident and environmentalist
