XR Lab

The XR Lab is a space for virtual reality and mixed reality experiences. The facility includes three private rooms with powerful PC desktops dedicated to VR app development and experience.

We can support introduction-level instruction to realtime editors such as Unity and Unreal Engine 5, and 3D design tools like Autodesk Maya, Gravity Sketch, Arkio, and Open Brush.

Drones / Aerial Imaging

The VizLab supports projects related to aerial mapping, GIS, and 3D modeling with drones. Aerial models can also be used in 3D printing and virtual or mixed reality experiences. We maintain a small fleet of drones, including the DJI Mavic Pro and Phantom 2. Due to policy, legal, and liability issues, these drones are available to Bates faculty and students for research purposes only and can only be operated by licensed CRC staff.

Generative AI Imagery

The VizLab has accounts with two popular image generators, DALLE and Midjourney, and can provide support and assistance for use towards academic projects. An example of this would be to create a texture map for a 3D model. For other generators based in traditional photography, such as Adobe Firefly, we recommend reaching out to Digital Media Studios.
