After the thoroughbred filly Sweet Vendetta won the prestigious Black-Eyed Susan Stakes in May, beaming Bobcats filled the winner’s circle at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md.

The Bates connections were owner Shirl Penney ’99 and his wife, Mary Ann, and daughter Townsend, as well as co-owner Dave Moore, who runs the Chase Hall post office. Penney, a Wall Street executive, invited Moore to be a co-owner back in 2007 because of Moore’s high net worth — as a longtime friend, that is.
